Delving into the family tree could throw up some dark secrets as new research reveals a fifth of Britons have a convicted criminal in our bloodline.
And one in 100 Britons has a direct relation who used to be a pirate according to new research.
The typical British family tree contains servants and war heroes, while three per cent of the population has links to royalty, said family history website Ancestry.co.uk.
Actress Patsy Kensit was shocked when she traced her relations on the BBC's Who Do You Think Are? programme and discovered her family had a criminal past.
