Annual Washington Correspondents' dinner: Night of the Jokes

The annual Washington Correspondents' dinner is meant to be Washington's traditional night of bonhomie, when policy wonks and hacks rub shoulders with power brokers in what some have dubbed The Oscars for Ugly People.

But amid the traditional jokes unleashed by President Obama during his speech at the dinner were some of the most acidic insults he has so far directed at Mitt Romney, his presumed Republican party opponent in November's election.

Since the mid-1920s, the annual dinner has afforded the president a chance to relax and share a few jokes. But this year Mr Obama barely deviated from the re-election playbook.

He mocked Mr Romney's wealth, his elitism and even his treatment of animals in an address that showcased his comic timing and ruthlessness. "It's great to be here this evening in the vast, magnificent Hilton ballroom. Or as Mitt Romney would call it, a little fixersupper," a smiling Mr Obama said.
