Kerber tames Serena to win her first Grand Slam at Melbourne

So finally it was it - Serena Williams, world number 1 and unbeatable since long, bowing to the German Angelique Kerber at the women's single final of the Australian Open tennis championship at the Melbourne Park today.

Kerber, seeded seventh, beat Williams 6-4 3-6 6-4 and thus became the first German since Steffi Graff to win a Grand Slam title. Steffi won the 1999 French Open title.

Williams, 34, was beaten for just the fifth time in 26 Grand Slam finals, and the American missed the chance to tie Graf's open-era record of 22 titles.
