Serena Williams ousted from US Open by unseeded Italian Vinci

Nobody could believe it when unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci would all mighty serena Williams as entered the court to play her semi final match at the US Open. But she did it, much to the surprise for the home crowd cheering for Serena to win her fourth Grand Slam of the year.

Serena overpowered skinny Vinci in the first set 6-2, but that was all she could do it as Vinci rebounded and took the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to stun the American and make her space in the finals. Vinci did something which the Russian Maria Sharapova could not do in over one decade to beat Serena.

Serena's dreams were shattered by her unexpected ouster as she was attempting to become the first woman since Steffi Graff to win the calendar-year Grand Slam, and match Graff's 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

Just a year younger to Serena, Vinci is now the lowest ranking player to make the US Open final since Venus Williams in 1997. She will now play her countrywoman and former roommate Flavia Pennetta in the final on Saturday.
